Migrant Justice – April 2021

THANK UU!

We made a contribution to the clothing and toiletries and backpack drive for recently released persons who were detained at Batavia. Justice for Migrant Families also raised $15,000 in two weeks to support over 30 people who were released, with immediate lodging and bus tickets to where they have friends or family around the country,

If you are interested in becoming a sponsor for a child, teen or adult who does not have family in the US, please be in touch with Dorothy Hoskins (Dorothy dot Hoskins @ gmail dot com).

Walk the Walk while you Talk the Talk

Support the important work of empowerment for local migrant workers by creating a team for the Rural and Migrant Ministry. We can make our own team. to  support their efforts in a virtual walk. As they say:

After a year unlike any other, we’re ready to get out there and enjoy the beautiful landscapes
across New York State. And what better way to do that than with RMM? Join us, statewide
(and even worldwide), for a walkathon unlike any other, July 17–18.
Walk alone or with your team at a location of your choice.
Join us by creating your own Justice Walk page and sharing it with others
on social media, text or email with just a few simple clicks.
All proceeds benefit the work and Mission of Rural & Migrant Ministry, Inc.,
through Accompaniment, Youth Empowerment and Education.
Dorothy is looking for someone who does Facebook to help with the actual organizing of our participation. Please connect to her at Dorothy dot Hoskins @ gmail dot com. I would love for us to pick a nice route, buddy up to walk together and commit funds to RRM.

NY now has passed the Excluded Workers Act

The NYS legislature has enacted legislation to provide funds to support people who did not qaulify for federal support due to being undocumented. From https://dol.ny.gov/excluded-workers-fund

     Overview

The Fiscal Year 2022 Enacted New York State Budget creates a $2.1 billion program to provide cash payments to workers who have suffered income loss due to COVID but who are ineligible for Unemployment Insurance or related Federal benefits due to their immigration status or other factors. Such workers must be low-income and provide sufficient documentation to establish work-related eligibility and residency in the state.

We will announce  additional details about the program, including how to apply, at a later date.
